David Merrin NEW 640 Spruce CSA Rosewood
David is an accomplished player and skilled constructor of classical guitars, and one of the emerging second generation of top flight luthiers. He is one of only two luthiers in the world whose work is endorsed by Jose and Liam Romanillos. He produces only a few high quality guitars per year, concentrating on design and craftsmanship of the highest order. It's interesting that collectors who are reducing the number of their guitars always wish to hold on to a Merrin if they have one, myself included.
The guitar has a Spruce top, and beautifully book-matched CSA Rosewood back and sides. The finish is Oil which is a departure from David's normal French Polish., as is the label. As can be expected, the workmanship is meticulous. With this particular guitar David has changed his standard Rosette pattern to incorporate a wavy almost three dimensional design. The herringbone pattern is echoed in the purfling and inlay work which even extends to an ebony inlay in the headstock V joint. The air resonance is F#. The guitar also incorporates a demountable Tornavoz which David has designed. As this has a gap in it to facilitate fitting its magnetic fixings also enable it to rotate. The result is a 'tunable Tornavoz' which can alter the balance between the bass and treble response by turning it. With its shorter scale of 640 the guitar is very easy to play and the standard body ensures good volume and projection. Bass and treble responses are outstanding with good balance across the strings. David keeps to a traditional fan-braced design. which results in a light guitar. This guitar is not only responsive, but also it allows the subtlety and complexity of tone required for musical interpretation.
